the short version

lightbugs is a private notebook. your notes, photos, videos and voice recordings are stored on your device — and in your phone’s own backups, if you use them. we do not run accounts, we do not have servers that receive your content, and we do not sell or share your data with anyone.

what we collect

nothing personal. the app does not ask for your name, email or location. if you enable crash reports in iOS settings, apple may share anonymised crash logs with us; these contain no note content.

device permissions

camera — to take a photo or a short video you keep as a note in a notebook.

microphone — to record a voice note, or the sound of a short video, for a notebook.

photo library — to add photos and videos you pick to a page, a photo to a cover, to save pages you share, and to save the photos and videos you take if you turn on save to photos.

notifications — only if you turn on the evening reminder.

each permission is requested the first time you use that feature and can be revoked any time in iOS settings.

sharing

when you share moments, lightbugs draws them as images on this phone and hands them to the iOS share sheet, or straight to instagram stories when you share one page or pick stories, or saves them to your photos. what happens after that is governed by the app you share to. “export my notes” puts every notebook, photo, video and voice note into one .zip file that is not encrypted; it goes only where you send it, so keep it somewhere private.

network

lightbugs goes online for two things: asking the app store whether a newer version is out, and finding and playing songs from Apple Music when you add one to a note. Apple sees the words you search, and the covers and clips of the songs in your notes load from Apple when a page shows or plays them. like any request from a phone, these carry its usual details, such as the device type and region. nothing else about you or your notes is sent, and without a connection everything else works the same.

keeping and deleting your notes

your notes stay on this phone until you delete them: remove a moment from its notebook, or erase everything in settings → danger zone → erase all data. deleting the app deletes its data from this phone too. we hold no copy, so there is nothing to ask us to delete. if your iPhone backs up to iCloud or a computer, those backups can hold a copy of your notes until they are replaced or deleted.

children

lightbugs is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

who we are

lightbugs is made and published by Jhon Kenrick Villaces.
